This series employs the language and communicative structures from such signage in an effort to examine and question their guidance and direction. If art is something truly subjective, what is to be said for the employment of these signs in order to preface – or limit – one’s experience? These works are shown in the sort of aluminum snap-frames, floor stands, and table-top displays often found in cultural institutions. These supports are designed to allow for content to be quickly exchanged as collection works go out on loan, galleries close for exhibition turnover, and works with sensitive content are installed. Presenting themselves and their most desireable works within temporary wall constructions that sometimes feel closer to labirinths for lab mice rather than the idealized white cube they seem to derive from, gallerists and dealers make every effort to keep their booths pristine. But after the hours of work – installing, socializing, selling – rise into the double digits, one is forced to plug in their most essential devices, often bearing Apple logos: phones, tablets, and laptops. To realize these works, I roll the paint onto the canvases, then while the paint is still wet, I wrap them in plastic sheeting as if they were being packed up for shipping or storage. By deliberately disregarding standard, fine art handling and packing procedures, these acts—normally done to prevent aesthetic changes—are turned into a means by which the works are created. After the plastic is removed and the paint has dried, the canvases are then installed onto the wall by means of only the tension from two tightened lashing straps.
